ACCELERATED READER PROGRAMME
Our Accelerated Reader programme aims to encourage all our students to be enthusiastic and regular readers for pleasure. Throughout Key Stage 3, students undertake one reading lesson per week.
Students are awarded achievement points for regular reading at home as recorded by their parents / carers in their reading log. There are half-termly prizes for students undertaking the most reading, together with certificates and prizes for all Word Millionaires throughout the year.
Students with scores below target in their reading comprehension tests will be entered on to the Lexia programme which aims to improve their literacy levels. In reading lessons, mentors direct support to reluctant readers in the class.
The reading of literature is a hugely enjoyable activity and has been proven to raise academic achievement in a range of subjects. In addition to improving students’ reading, writing and comprehension skills, reading literature stimulates moral growth and empathy as students consider people and situations that they might otherwise never encounter.

Whilst the school has a stock of books to loan to students, they are welcome use their reading lesson to read any book (i.e. their own book or one borrowed form a library) that is part of the Accelerated Reader programme.

Most libraries across London are part of a consortium, meaning that library members can have any book from any London library in the consortium delivered to their local library for borrowing. Membership and borrowing is absolutely free, so each member has access to hundreds of thousands of titles:
All our students will be issued Newham library cards that are digitally generated and will no longer need to fill in a form. If you need further information, please contact Ms. Rowe, Assistant Principal.
Overdrive is free for anyone who has a library card and a pin number. Once you have downloaded the app and registered, students can download books and audio books on their devices and it is all free. The app covers most libraries across the London boroughs. Please click here for the link to the app.
